THE BEST LEARNING HAPPENS

IN LOVING AND CARING RELATIONSHIPS

To develop well, a child’s brain needs loving, caring, stable, supportive relationships with parents and carers in their family and community.
You can’t spoil a baby.

Based on the Circle of Security model (Cassidy, Cooper, Hoffman, Marvin & Powell, 2002), infants need a secure base from which to explore their world and a safe haven to come back to when they need comfort.   This security and safety comes from the parent/care giver attending to the infant's needs in a predictable, consistent way.  The Circle of Security model shares an important philosophy for parents to follow - ALWAYS be bigger, stronger, wiser and kind; WHENEVER POSSIBLE: follow your child's need; WHENEVER NECESSARY: take charge.  Having enough fun, caring, and safe time with a child can lead to a healthy attachment between parent and child, which can then lead to building resilience and a positive self-image.

YOU ARE MY SUNSHINE

This is a popular song that you can sing to your child while dancing around the room. It could be sung every day before sleep time or while they are splashing about in the bath which is when I used to sing it to my son who is now almost 16.  Singing a song like this will help them to feel very special and loved and will help build their brain.

I just sang the chorus over and over for a long time. I have added the verses if you choose to sing them,  although the sentiments are a bit strange!!  Enjoy the song and form that special relationship with your baby.

My SUNSHINES!!

"You Are My Sunshine"

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are grey
You never know, dear, how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away

Verses
The other night, dear, as I lay sleeping
I dreamt I held you in my arms
When I awoke, dear, I was mistaken
So I hung my head, and I cried

I'll always love you and make you happy
If you will only say the same
But if you leave me to love another,
You'll regret it all one day
Written by Jimmie Davis & Charles Mitchell 1939

Below is another short and sweet rhyme to share with your child to help them feel loved and cared for. Sing it every day to your child and look into their eyes.
