NUMBER

MARCH RHYME of the MONTH

The NUMERACY RHYME of the month relates to NUMBER

A number is a count or measurement.

We write or talk about numbers using numerals such as "3" or "three". We could also hold up 3 fingers, or tap the table 3 times. These are all different ways of referring to the same number. (Reference - Maths is Fun)

ONE KANGAROO

ONE kangaroo met ONE kangaroo

So TWO kangaroos went hopping

HOP, HOP, HOP

HOP, HOP, HOP

HOP, HOP, HOP

Until they had to STOP!!

TWO kangaroos met ONE kangaroo

So THREE kangaroos went hopping

HOP, HOP, HOP

HOP, HOP, HOP

HOP, HOP, HOP

Until they had to STOP!!

(Substitute: Leap, bound, jump, thump, bounce, kick)

Birth to six months: Chant the rhyme with your baby sitting on your lap or lying on a rug on the floor.  Use your fingers to represent the kangaroos – adding one each time.  Have your fingers and hands hopping like the kangaroos in an exaggerated way and freeze at the end of the verse.  Very young children will enjoy listening to you chant the rhyme and watching the actions.  You can also hold your baby and hop with them like a kangaroo to make it lots of fun.

Six months to 5+ years: Continue to share this simple chant with your infant, toddler and young child.  Encourage your child to join in with the chant and follow and do the actions in the rhyme. This will help to increase their language and vocabulary as they are “doing” the actions, "singing" the actions, "hearing" the actions and "seeing" the actions – a multisensory activity.  You can use three “stuffed” toys to be the kangaroos.  When your child is familiar and understands numbers to three increase the numbers of the kangaroos – this can go on forever!!

Early Numeracy – NUMBER

Early development of number concepts is important in developing positive attitudes about maths at an early age.  As early as 2 many children will be able to parrot the words “one” “two” “three”.  However rarely do they understand that the number refers to an item or a set of items.

Playing, singing, chanting rhymes, and dancing will all assist children to develop early numeracy skills. Activities should include some items that children can touch and manipulate, such as three kangaroo toys! When they count by touching an item, it is called one to one correspondence and is one of the first stages of counting.

Most important of all - it should be fun!!

Building a mathematical language is really important with very young children so they become very familiar with the words and what they mean.  Here are some Counting and Number words you can introduce naturally as you are playing with your child.  This will help them with understanding numeracy concepts in the future.

USING PICTURE BOOKS TO ASSIST IN DEVELOPING Early Numeracy and PLAY WITH Mathematical Concepts

The Butterfly Wings Team would like to encourage families and early year’s educators to use picture books as a starting point to develop

EARLY NUMERACY
